Industrial M2M devices filter all collected data before sending efficiently to intelligent systems or people. An Industrial M2M device must filter the information so the management system focuses on the most relevant or significant information.
Utilities do control remotely those systems without a permanent connection but from which we need time-related reports. Therefore, Industrial M2M devices must be able to storage data every time an event occurs or regularly. The storage includes values and the time when the event occurred. This data report is transmitted periodically to the SCADA to be analysed.
Intelligent devices are able to generate big information volumes. While a sensor does only provide one process variable, intelligent devices can supply multiples process variables, including hundreds of alarms, configurable parameters, diagnostics, etc.
An Industrial M2M device can combine statistical operations (average values, totalizers…) and historical date. This can be combined also with calculations such as measuring corrections to make work easier to accounting management systems. Moreover this database must involve audit trail, which is essential for accountability purposes.
The Industrial M2M device must have logical programming functions like PLC for local standalone control of the central system. The programming of the control system must be made with industry standards such as IEC-61131. It’s not usual having an equipment with the same gateway features. Industrial M2M enables a cost reduction when adding the PLC to the aforementioned solutions.
